Knit and Study

That's all I do lately. Knit and Study.

I'm down to one paper and four finals, though, schoolwise. Which is good--two papers and the massive group project are finished. Thank God. I can do this.

I also went to Mary's and knit on Friday, then to her super fun Christmas party where I met my new twin Kasey (seriously, we are freakishly similar, Allison and Mary kept giggling and looking at us funny...I think they regret ever putting us in the same room) and people learned how to knit, and we'll hang out and knit more today too. YAY KNITTING!

I've been plodding along on the holiday knitting, so I can update people. Aren't you all thrilled?

Mom: Christmas present, status, started
Dad: birthday gift, finished, Christmas gift, halfway finished

Aunt Joanne: birthday gift, finished, Christmas gift, needs to be started
Uncle Tom: Not even started but can be late
Aunt Diane: Just needs finishing, but can be late
Cats and Dogs: Not even started, but thankfully animals cannot read a calendar
Kelly: done

Megan: halfway done
Leah: done
Andie: just needs finishing
Mary: in the planning stages. will involve intarsia Hello Kitty (she's already been informed of this, I"m not spoiling any surprise)

Laurie: ideas are brewing

Please ignore the wonky formatting of this post--I have no idea WHY it's doing this.

Holiday Knitting

It's that time of year again, the time when knitters frantically labor over gifts, swearing that next year, really, they'll start knitting in June.

Also, when college students happily knit along on said holiday gifts while ignoring the giant pile of papers and finals they should be writing, researching, and studying for.

My holiday knit list is as follows (vaguely):

Mom: Christmas present, status, started
Dad: birthday gift, finished
        Christmas gift, started
Aunt Joanne: birthday gift, barely started
Christmas gift, needs to be started
Uncle Tom: Not even started but can be late
Aunt Diane: Just needs finishing, but can be late
Cats and Dogs: Not even started, but thankfully animals cannot read a calendar
Kelly: done
Megan: halfway done
Leah: done
Andie: just needs finishing
Mary: no idea...what do you knit a knitter!? Mary, anything you want but don't want to make for yourself?
Possibly also figuring out a gift for my friend Laurie, who I just got back in touch with

Mostly it's small stuff, but still...

On the upside, I seem to be in a very zen state of not panicking lately. Which is great for my blood pressure, but not so much for my ability to get in gear and get stuff done.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

In case you haven't guessed, it's snowing here.  I love snow. I love it even better when I don't have to go outside in it, but I'll get to wear my lovely purple fake Uggs. Which totally don't match my bright lime green fleece, but who cares? Last I checked, the point of warm boots was to stay warm, not to look cute (yes, I'm talking to you LA!).

The new Knitty is live, so it's time again for my take on all the patterns!.

Kate: Cute, but don't know that I'd make it.

Pocket Creatures: Ditto.

Boogie Time: Love it. Must make...it's a great way to get nifty watches!

Necklace: Not really my style.

Bamboo: Pretty, but the last thing I need is more baskets/boxes/any storage container. It might make a good gift though, especially for those on my list who don't wear knitted items.

Namaste: Not a yoga person. So, meh.

Best Friend: Gorgeous. Must make someday.

Forecast: What's up with the arms? Not a huge fan.

Tempting II: SQUEE!! AHHH! Must. Have. Of course, I still have to get around to making Tempting, but I love Tempting II...I'd wear Tempting out, when I felt trendy/cute, but Tempting II is a more casual top. I adore them both....they're on my to knit list.

Festive: I like this one a lot too, although I'm not sure what I'd wear it with.

Tubey: Also going on the must knit list ASAP. I LOVE the neckline and sleeves, and even the stripes, though I'm not sure I can find that many colors I like. I can't afford Cashmerino Aran, so I plan on subbing in Luxery Cashmere from AC Moore. I'm definately keeping the arm stripes, though, even if I do a solid body. LOVE IT!!

Blanche-Niege: What's with the fuzzy stuff? Ick.

Bristow: Very pretty. At first I thought, eh, won't make it, but then I remembered my lack of work appropriate sweaters. My style tends towards trendy or big and comfy, neither of which work in an office. And since I'm rapidly approaching the point at which I must get a real job, this sweater is going on my list.

Cheesey Puffs: Maybe in a different color, it might work for my Dad. But he's not getting another sweater for a while now.

Bobblicious: I hate bobbles. Enough said.

Chaos and Blu: Small children frighten me. The patterns are cute, but...yeah. No reason to make them.

Pomatamus: Pretty, will definately encourage the sock making love.

Thuja: I like this a lot, too. Socks are fun!

Marley: Maybe I could work it into a Halloween costume?

Danica: Ok, normally I don't like Entrelac, but this is really quite pretty. I may have to attempt it some day.

Spike: Eh.

Urban Rustic Gloves: I think they'd be a little too thick for me--I can barely function in barely there leather gloves. But pretty.

Real Stocking Cap: Amusing but no.

Mrs. Beeton: Oddly appealing, I may have to make those some day. The colors were fabulous. They're very girly, though. But awfully pretty.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks--if only for the short break before finals--but I have a lot to be thankful for today.

Especially the Most Amazing Maitenance Guy EVER who came at 8:30 am on a holiday to fix my broken sink.  Thank you, Most Amazing Maitenance Guy!

As usual at Thanksgiving, there was food. We had turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, (soy)creamed onions, challah rolls, and ginger apple pie with (soy)ice cream. It all turned out great, although I wasn't a huge fan of the pie--it turned out ok, I just didn't like that particular flavor combination as much as I had thought I would.

I am also now in posession of a working TV. YAY! I now have some clue as to what's going on in the world.

Speaking of TV, I watched CSI tonight, and dude, WTF is up with George Ead's mustache? It's CSI, now featuring a '70s porn star! I mean, I like the guy, he's very talented and adorable, but, please, shave.

The cats would like to take this moment to say they are thankful for fuzzy mice, feather toys, and greenies.

In a knitting related note--I do knit, I swear!--I cast on for yet another supersecret holiday gift. This one is shiny and glittery and will be absolutely gorgeous when finished.

I just can't tell you what it is.

Packages and Broken Electronics!

Last week, I got an awesome package from my secret pal!

She sent me an adorable card, a cute book on cats, some really yummy looking Moose Munch which looks all chocolatey and popcorny and good, some gorgeous Sockotta sock yarn, and the best smelling candle EVER! I just want to sit there smelling it all day long.

Then, my TV died. Then, my mp3 player started skipping, shutting off, and now won't play music in the left earpiece of the headphones (it's not an ipod, it's the cheap knockoff....shoulda just spent more money on the ipod, maybe it'd still be working). Then, today, my garbage disposal died and my sink won't drain. And my landlady says she can't get anyone out to fix it until tomorrow and even then she won't guarentee it because it's Thanksgiving.

Which sucks, because my mother is coming and we were going to cook a yummy Thanksgiving dinner. Now...we may be eating take out from the Kabob place on 23rd street. And I'll cry.

We will, however, have a really ugly pie.

It kind of collapsed in the middle. Good thing none of my friends were in town, so I'm not having anyone over (except my mom, who is critical anyway, and who already knows I suck).

Ok. Now that I'm all upset and weepy, it's time for me to go pet my sock yarn and sniff my candle until I feel better.

I'm Feeling Narcissistic Today

I've been fascinated by self-portraits lately. Which on one level is really incredibly narcissistic. But on the other...I'm fascinated by the difference in pictures taken only a week or two apart. The ability to reveal not just mood and what's going on in my life, but also, on some level, how I see myself. I think. And it's interesting what others see--what I think is the best shot isn't always what others think...

I don't know. I just find it fascinating.

So...here's some I took last night. While buzzed on peppermint mocha from Starbucks. Mmmm...peppermint mocha.

So that's that.

Let me know what you think. Anyone. If anyone's out there reading this.

Sunglasses of Justice

So, since TWOP doesn't do recaps of some of my favorite shows, I've decided to take the burden upon myself. Yes, I will be recapping here on this blog.

My intention is to do the recaps on Saturday, but I didn't get them all done...or posted....last week. So these are from LAST WEEK's shows, not this weeks.

Cold Case

In “Saving Patrick Bubley,” Lilly investigates a case related to her first as a detective. Which she actually remembers, unlike me, who is usually so terrified on my first day of any job that I don’t even remember who I am.  The case is about a family where four brothers have been killed by a gang and of course there’s some deeper meaning about life, instead of just people shooting each other over really stupid shit. This episode was apparently brought to us by the Drug Council of America, because they have the mother getting addicted to crack after one hit, and maybe I’m just hopelessly naïve, but can you really get completely addicted to drugs after one hit? I couldn’t even get addicted to cloves (the cigarette, not the spice) after two years, though, so maybe I’m just weird. We also find out that Jo disappeared for reasons that no one knows but Scotty suspects it’s got to do with him. Scotty needs to stop falling over every girl that crosses his path because it never works out for him, does it? Lilly starts freaking out because she’s starting not to feel compassionate towards every single victim and family member that crosses her path, no matter how obnoxious and rude they may be. She also has a new look going on, and I have to say I’m really not a fan. Bring back the pantsuits and sexy yet professional updo, Lilly! It was realistic. It was hot. Ok, I’ll let the pantsuit thing go, but please just put your hair up in the clip again. Please? Anyway, they solve the case, they see dead people, and then the detectives all go out for beer and I cried. Because I always cry. Damn you, Cold Case, for making me be a girl.

How I Met Your Mother

In “Matchmaker” Lily and Marshall find a mutant beast in their apartment. Apparently it’s a cross between a mouse and a cockroach. I buy it—if any place were to breed such a creature, it would be New York. Or DC. I remember the first time I saw a cockroach. I’d like to say I bravely squashed it without flinching, but it’s entirely possible that I leapt onto the sofa and screamed like a girl. The mouse I called Mortimer and wanted to put in a cage but my roommates wouldn’t let me. Roommates suck. Anyhow, Marshall and Lily plan to kill it, but it’s a wily cockamouse.  Ted goes to a matchmaker and finds out he has no matches in NYC. And then they sing and dance with their brooms as they clean their house in the shetl of…oh. Wait. Wrong matchmaker. My bad. He finds his best match, but she’s already been fixed up and is engaged, he hits on her anyway and instead of a date gets basal cell carcinoma (and no, I didn’t have to look that up). Poor Ted. Barney is a geek and Robin finally sees that the cockamouse is real, as it soars off into the skies of New York…and then crashes into a window and dies. Circle of life, people, circle of life.

CSI: Miami

“Felony Flight” opens with a bunch of stupid college kids in a convertible who see  plane crash. They actually go to see what’s going on and then proceed to get shot. Way to encourage apathy there, CBS. If you care…you die! Anyway. Turns out the plane was carrying a murderer who was supposed to come tell the cops where a body was buried. Because no one’s ever tried that trick before. So he sabotaged the plane so it would crash. Why are police planes so easy to sabotage? Seriously, if you know you’re going to be transporting felons, wouldn’t you have the thing, I don’t know, welded together or something? At least come up with some funky, exotic screwdriver so that any fool with a Philips head can’t bring down your plane. The team springs into action, with Horatio donning his sunglasses of justice and dispensing pithy sayings and Alexx smoothing back the hair on all the corpses and poor Calleigh, Eric, and….what’s his face. You know, the Greg Sanders clone. Him. They all get shoved aside. Serial killer guy murders a bunch of sorority sisters—and honestly, is it really that much of a loss to society? Five fewer rich, catty, anorexic women with no brains? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. And Horatio is joined by the emotionless guy from CSI: NY making it impossible for me to find a scene with two characters I like less. Corpses have more personality than those two—and speaking of corpses, the one they dug up looks pretty damn good for someone who’s supposedly been dead for a year. Turns out serial killer guy didn’t kill her, someone else did but we don’t know who. And serial killer dude took his sorority girl hostage to NY on a plane he got from some rich chick who’s been writing to him in jail and who looks stunned that he kidnapped someone. Um, lady? He’s in JAIL. That’s where the bad people go. You’re not going to be the one who saves him—but, hey, if you get Hannibal Lechter you might have a shot at becoming an all you can eat buffet. We’re supposed to watch CSI: NY to find out what happened, but honestly, I don’t really care. If you want to know, watch it yourself.

NCIS

“Under Covers” begins with Tony looking all 007. And Ziva is there. And I’m not really sure what the dialogue was, because my brain stopped working when I saw Tony, but anyway they start going at it…or do they? Apparently it’s all an act, and they’re supposed to be undercover as assassins. Ducky is attempting to figure out about the assassins through autopsy, because he’s apparently the amazing Kreskin now, and Abby shows up wearing the cutest ever fifties bowling outfit. I want that outfit. And then I want to go bowling and say things like gee whiz and golly. A couple of people are spying on Ziva and DiNozzo who are apparently pretending to have lots and lots of sex while really insulting each other. I have to say, I really, really, like some of those scenes because all you can see of Ziva is her hair and if I squint real hard, tilt my head just the right way, and don’t look to hard I can pretend it’s me in bed with…and I just realized my mother reads this blog, so pretend that last sentence didn’t exist. Anyway. Ziva and DiNozzo are attempting to figure out who hired them, and it turns out the people watching them are FBI. Gibbs gets into a fake pissing war with the FBI agent in charge, but it turns out they’re old pals when no one is looking. Abby snarks at Ziva but I forgive her because, dude, she’s Abby. Chip is still there, being an overachiever. No one likes you, Chip. Go away. Please. Ziva and DiNozzo fail to notice a guy in the elevator going for a gun, which strikes me as kind of sloppy, especially for a Mossad agent. Aren’t they supposed to be all kick ass? The bad guy takes them to a hotel room and demands a disk and beats the crap out of DiNozzo. Ducky finds the disk—embedded in the eye of the female assassin’s body. Can I just say, EWW! Turns out she was pregnant and they were getting out of the business. Ziva tricks the guy into going to their hotel room where Gibbs gets him, and DiNozzo beats the living shit out of the other thug even those he’s still tied to a chair. Cause he’s just that good. Everybody fawns over DiNozzo and snarks at Ziva back at NCIS. Gibbs is heartbroken to see that Ducky is escorting the Director to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. Lauren Holly seriously looks like she has inflatable balloons stuck to her chest in that dress. Seriously. Do men really find breasts that huge to be attractive? Abby stops to wish Gibbs a happy birthday, and he sits sadly alone at his desk drinking from a flask his late wife gave him. Everybody say it with me---aww.

Ahem.

So apparently I'm making a slow start on this blogging regularly resolution.

Not much to report, have cast on for two supersecret holiday gifts, so I can't say much....I've also cast on for a movie Ravenclaw scarf. It's knit flat, not in the round because I'm teaching a class on it and they don't have the right size circs...le sigh. I hate seaming.

Anyone in NoVA (or who knows anyone who is) should totally come check out Michael's big yarn event this weekend! I'm at the store out on Richmond Hwy, and on Saturday afternoon there is a class preview day and on Sunday there's a big yarn event, with sales, a stitch doctor, and lots of cool stuff.

I'll be teaching two classes in Dec--on Dec 3, a "Knit a Wizard Scarf" class and starting on Dec 4, a three week class on sock knitting, in which we will be making some fuzzy slipper socks that would make excellent gifts.

I also registered for classes for next semester--I'll be taking screenwriting, science and medical reporting, issues in space policy, basic italian part two, and political and campaign advertising.

More later!

Who Needs Sleep?

Not much done with actual knitting. And, I apologize, knitting pictures will be getting rather far between as I'm working on gifts which must remain secret.

I did hear about a job, I'm now officially going to be a knitting instructor at Michaels. YAY! I don't know what classes I'll be teaching yet, but I'll post them here when I find out, so if anyone (helloo...anyone out there?) is reading this in the DC area, tell all your friends! :)

In non knitting news, I got a B+ on my con law midterm, so I am very very happy. I have to go study for psych now...really...I have too. I didn't study last time and I got a B+, I'm hoping actual studying will get me up to an A.

Plus, I feel guilty cause last time everyone was all, oh I stayed up for hours and didn't sleep and I studied for like ten minutes and got a B.

Blog Organization

I realize my updates have been very, shall we say, sporadic.

So, I've decided to try and organize my blogging. So that my readers (do I have readers? or am I making y'all up?) will have fun and exciting (I hope) things to read.

I hung out with Kelly and Mary this weekend. There was going to be knitting involved, but instead we went to IHOP for delicious caramel apple pancakes and then marauded through Target. We got back and instead of knitting, watched How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and played poker. Mary won all of the chips--good thing we weren't playing for money.

Well, good for me and Kelly anyhow.

Then, today, I got to see Michael Crichton speak and it was so fabulous. I got a book signed and took a picture with him, which I will post when I get it developed. I actually talked to him, and was amazed I could still form coherant speech.

He's my favorite author of all time. I'm still in awe of meeting him.

Must go. Cats are looking at me as if I am a filet mignon--I think maybe they want to be fed.
